Set it and forget it?

Aug 14, 2022

Hey,

Happy Sunday! Hope you are having a wonderful weekend and have the opportunity to unwind, even if it's just for an hour or so.

I'm terrible for not stopping; I thoroughly enjoy my work and I sometimes find it very hard to step away. But when I do, that's when I have the best ideas; when I give myself time to just think, with a clear mind.

Maybe you're the same? Perhaps you love writing and everything that goes along with it?

Let me ask you this though... when was the last time you took an entire day off? Really? One full day?

The beauty of being an author is that you can earn royalties fairly passively.

Yes, you need to put in a LOT of work upfront researching, planning, writing, editing, formatting your book, etc, but once it's launched, and you have a solid system in place for marketing it, you can literally earn money while you sleep (that phrase feels slimy to me, but there is some truth behind it for authors).

However, being an author is not a set it and forget it business model. It still requires regular, consistent work to keep your books selling.

Amazon Ads are no different.

Launching some Ads and letting them run for 3 months without once logging into your Amazon Ads dashboard isn't a strategy - it's hope marketing and it doesn't work.

I'm not saying you need to spend hours and hours optimizing and managing your Amazon Ads. One 30-60 minute session per week can be enough, where you're adjusting budgets and bids, trimming wasted ad spend and testing new ideas.

One 5-10 minute daily check-in on your Ads and overall stats (i.e. Total Royalties, Orders and Page Reads) is also going to give you the opportunity to identify any red flags.

You're an author, after all, not a marketing consultant.

Yes, marketing and advertising is incredibly important, but writing your next book is, arguably, even more important, providing you have a solid system in place for positioning your current books in front of your ideal readers.

Set it and forget it, Amazon Ads are not; but, truth be told, you'll find that very little in life really is.

So, find a system that works for you, implement it and stay consistent.

Enjoy the rest of your Sunday.

To Your Success
- Matt
