This Almost Defeated Me
Nov 21, 2022
Hey,
Yesterday, I tried a new workout in our gym at home. And it was a tough one.
It included 3 intense rounds of bodyweight exercises, including pull-ups, chin-ups, burpees, press-ups, jump squats, and more.
After 1 round, I was ready to give up, exhausted. After 2 rounds, I almost did give up.
What kept me going?
The end result. The long-game.
I knew if I wanted my body to adapt and get stronger, I'd have to push through.
Now, what does all this have to do with advertising books, I'm sure you're thinking.
The reason I share this story is because growth doesn't happen when we're comfortable; it happens when we're uncomfortable, outside of our comfort zone.
And I'm sure, when you're setting up Ads for your books, particularly in the beginning, when everything is new, you feel uncomfortable. Spending all this money with no guarantee of a return on that investment.
It's scary. I get it. I've been there.
This fear you may be feeling though is just your brain trying to keep you safe. That's its job.
Fear is simply:
False Evidence Appearing Real.
Once you step out of your comfort zone, yes, against the wishes of your brain and the fear you're feeling, that's when the magic happens.
When I started advertising my wife's books, spending $10 per day seemed like a LOT of money. I never dreamed we'd be spending $250-$300 per day and doing so profitably.
And it never would have happened if I hadn't done something uncomfortable – i.e. increasing the Ad Spend.
These things don't have to be done overnight; take your time with them.
For us, yes, I've increased Ad Spend each month, but it's taken a couple of years to do it. And I increased Ad Spend in bigger jumps when we launched an additional book into the series because there was more profit available due to read-through.
Adaptable Systems
The other reason I share this story is because of systems.
Workouts are essentially systems; a series of steps to follow that lead to a desired result.
The systems I share inside Jumpstart Amazon Ads and Jumpstart Facebook Ads, for example, have the same purpose.
However, they can be adapted to suit you.
With yesterday's workout, I changed things up a bit; increased the intensity of the exercises, and reduced the rest time between each exercise and round.
You can do the same with your Ads.
Follow the system, yes, as it's proven. But if there are little nuances you feel would be a better match for your books, then tweak things to suit.
All this to say, find a system, use it, adapt it if necessary, and do the uncomfortable; this is where you will find growth and more exciting opportunities coming your way.
