#064: It's OK To Change

Jul 20, 2024

Read Time: 3 Minutes

Over the years, I've changed my Facebook Ads strategy several times. And to be perfectly honest, I've hesitated doing this on occasion.

Maybe it's because I teach Facebook Ads through Facebook Ads Mastery For Authors and I can feel the "oh no, not another update" vibes coming from authors in the course.

But then I remind myself that Facebook Ads as a platform changes every 24 hours (or it at least feels that way).

And when I see a strategy, a tactic, a way of doing things, stop working for myself, I believe this information would benefit others, which is why I update my course.

This Happened Very Recently

The Facebook Ads strategy I've been using for a few months stopped working for me, so I tweaked it ever so slightly and updated my course to reflect this (the update was released 2 days ago).

Teaching something in a course that I'm not doing myself feels inauthentic.

And to be honest, if I was still trying to make Facebook Ads work based on what I was doing back in 2020, 2021, even 2022 or 2023, chances are, things wouldn't be working too well.

It's OK To Change

If we don't change, if we don't adapt, if we don't evolve, that's when we start getting left behind.

I'm not saying we should all be constantly shifting gears or jumping on the latest trends or the latest fads. Far from it.

I'm saying we need to stick to our roots, not forget our why, or our goals, but at times we'll need to course-correct.

And rather than trying to fight a course correction, or trying to force the square peg into the round hole, a better option (in the words of Bruce Lee) would be to be like water.

So, if you've found yourself resisting something in any area of your author business, or even in your personal life, know that it's ok to change.

I genuinely feel that following our intuition and following our gut is something we all need to do more of.

There can be a lot of pressure online to do things a certain way. But what if that way doesn't feel right to you? What if your gut is telling you something doesn't feel right? Shouldn't we pay attention to that?

You Won't Have A 100% Success Rate

Trial and error. It's a natural part of life. It's how we learn to walk, it's how we learn to swim, it's how we learn to relate and connect to other human beings.

And it happens with all areas of your author business, too.

Some things will work. Some things won't. And that's ok.

You don't need everything to work. You only need a handful of things to work.

– 20% of your books will earn 80% of your royalties.

– 20% of your Facebook Ads will generate 80% of your Sales and Page Reads

– 20% of your Advertising efforts will be responsible for 80% of your overall Sales and Page Reads

– 20% of your readers will buy 80% of your books

It's the minority of inputs that are responsible for the majority of the outputs.

This is why I'm a big component of less is more.

You don't need to be everywhere online and do all the things because most of it won't work anyway.

Focus on a handful of strategies and tactics and discard the rest.

Putting the blinkers on, especially online, can save you from being pulled in all directions, feeling guilty for not doing something a certain way, or even feeling a sense of FOMO (Fear of Missing Out).

A lot of the time, what we see in communities, podcasts, blog posts, etc, are just distractions disguised as opportunities.

When you know who you are, what you're doing, where you're heading and why you're heading there, you can be more aware of what is really going on around you.

Wrapping Up

This has been less of a tactical newsletter and more of a strategic one but is a topic that's been on my mind a lot recently, which is why I wanted to share it with you.

Change can be scary. Change can be unnerving. Change can be intimidating.

But with change, with stepping out of our comfort zone, often comes incredible opportunities.

So, if there are areas of your business or personal life that you feel are stagnant, or are just not working like they once were, I encourage you to seriously consider making a change.

There could well be occasions when these changes don't work. And it may just be that you need more time to see the ripple effects of this change. Or it could be that this change just needs a few tweaks.

Either way, change, for the most part, can be good, especially if what you're currently doing isn't serving you anymore.

That's it for this week.

Thank you for reading, enjoy the rest of your weekend and I'll be back with you next week.

To Your Success
– Matt
